MATTA GAWA-
MATTA GAWA is an improvising drums+guitar duo hailing from Washington DC. Building with time and texture, their music is deeply connected to the methods and spirit of jazz, while retaining the electric backbone of creative rock music.
Loosely translated, MATTA GAWA means river of moments- an apt description for their spontaneously composed flow of singing guitars, free-form drumming, howling feedback, sub-blasting bass, stagger-stepped odd-time signatures, polyrhythmic beatrock + guitar solos.
Both founder members of DC’s New Atlantis Collective of musicians, drummer Sam Lohman has also worked with early NYHC legends Sheer Terror, the Radon Collective, Steve Mackay of the Stooges, and the Acid Mothers Temple. Guitarist Ed Ricart works with Marshall Allen of the Sun Ra Arkestra, Peter Brotzmann, Herb Robertson, Jason Ajemian, G. Calvin Weston, and members of avant rock legends Fugazi, Bardo Pond, Pinback, Stinking Lizaveta, and the Swirlies.
Upcoming releases include ‘BA’ on Engine Studios (distributed internationally though ESP-DiSK) and an LP/CDR release on Thor’s Rubber Hammer. A second CD is set for a Spring 2011 release on New Atlantis Records (curated by Ed Ricart, and home to recordings by Peter Brotzmann, Han Bennink, and many more)-
Matta Gawa will head on tour with the legendary percussionist, William Hooker, in July of 2010, followed by a month-long North American tour with Kuan in August.

KUAN-
If you watch the audience at a Kuan gig, something unusual happens to the socially diverse crowd that tends to make up their fan base. The punk rockers, prog rockers, hipsters, b-boys and metalheads all react in about the same way: they start by nodding their heads. Then they sway a little. Then, they do whatever the word 'dance' means to each of them. They smile.
Kuan is a Buddhist term. It translates as "wordless contemplation." But it is clear that lyricless as they are, Kuan's songs speak to their audiences. There is an urban legend that says when John Coltrane would perform one of his trademark hour-long solos while with the Miles Davis Quintet, someone once asked Miles "Why'd you let him play so long?" Miles's reply: "He wasn't finished saying what he had to say."
Kuan formed originally as a three-piece, adding Wright in 2008 The quartet's post-rock, punk and jazz-influenced heavy groove has been compared by critics to Tortoise, June of 44, Do Make Say Think, and Fugazi. The Dayton-based band claims all of these, as well as Miles Davis, John and Alice Coltrane and Aphex Twin as influences. They attract fans from across the genres.
